The Rise of Rachael Ray
I've been pondering what makes Rachael Ray so popular. Time has named her one of the 100 "People Who Shape Our World"
And all I can come up with is, she is what Ellen Degeneres and Oprah Winfrey ain't. She's white, hetero, suburban, NASCAR friendly and appears to be able to cook. She's who you would like to see hopping out of the SUV to pick up the kids. That's good comforting TV in regular America.

I can tell you as a huge Rachael Ray fan that you pretty much got it right. More specifically, she appeals to people who don't really know how to cook, but don't want to eat as much fast food, and who don't have a ton of time or energy to devote to cooking. her shows and books teach cooking skills in an approachable way that (at least for me) makes cooking fun. I hope you will try some of her recipes and see for yourself.

Madeline apparently can't read because you weren't complimenting (rightly so) America's Super Cook, Rachel Ray. Go back and see the tongue in the cheek, Madeline.
There is a Rachel Ray Cult in this country and I. Don't. Get. It.
Her voice is annoying (why does she only talk out of one side of it?) and her dishes are simplistic and standard.
Yes, she appeals to the NASCARing, Wal-Marting masses who are afraid of anyone who doesn't Look Like Them.
God forbid the Food TV Network feature anyone of color or ethnicity or cook something French, Italian or Moroccan. Rachel's about all their viewership can handle 'cause she's "safe."
Thanks for the post.
I love how people write snarky comments and stay anonymous. Cracks me up.
I agree the original post was tongue in cheek, but like most sarcasm, there was a grain of truth in it. Rachael Ray does appeal to the masses and I think that is a postive, not a negative thing.
Unless you just like to be a contrarian . . . .
